Ce musée a été créé à la suite d’une proposition en 1824 du baron François-Xavier Fabre, peintre et collectionneur, de faire don à la ville de ses collections, à condition qu’elles soient à l’origine d’un musée.
Le musée présente plus de 700 oeuvres – peintures, sculptures, dessins – dans un espace de 9 200m², et notamment de nombreux chefs-d’oeuvre.
